Wow. That's unreal. We hardly ever get 100 - maybe once in 20 years.

Stay cool, Susan.

oop's my bad, 101

my central heat and air can't keep up with that kind of heat, it wasn't made for it so I put in a good size window unit in the living room, since the living room and dineing room are combined it provides a nice size "safe zone" and I leave the cental off as it's mostly just a waste in this weather

I could never afford it either. My friend who lives on the 3rd floor has to have AC.

I don't. She keeps hers in the living room too, and circulates it around with a window fan in her BR.

She says the cost isn't bad - but her apt is small, and it's usually only for 2 months a year, not like

where you all are.

we have a small unit in the bedroom as it would be impossible to sleep otherwise, I usually leave it off during the day unless I'm in there doing something and yes the cost is amazingly expensive, we could have a much better house anywhere else in the country if we didn't have to pay the electric in the summer

I'm hoping my new window unit will cut the cost a bit and even if it doesn't it'll give us at least a couple rooms that you can actually be comfortable in

I'd like to have a window unit and turn off the whole house AC...but our homeowners association will not allow window units.

We might get snow in the higher elevations.

ouch, that's too bad, it would probably save you some money

have you tried closing off the parts of the house you don't use?

Yup. Close all the doors, and cover the vents. Also, reroute the airflow from the air ducts...

Still, that leaves a lot of heated/air conditioned wasted space.

I wasn't thinking at all when I purchased a house with 3 levels. :nope:

My next (and hopefully last) house will be a rambler. :agreed:

We have a so-called rambler and in the summer we rarely have to turn on the air before 4:00 in the afternoon when the back of the house gets the setting sun. It's stucco with plaster walls. We're always amazed by how cool it stays in here.

do you have a basement? you could probably just shut down the unit and make a man cave down there :chuckle:

Yeah, I have a basement....full finished. It's basically a family cave (except my office)... it has a library area, the A/V area, a games area and a wet bar. Yeah, I could live down there easily!
