Only three or four years late here - but I just watched 'Donnie Darko' - by myself - which was an accomplishment in and of itself because the description capsule included the words 'psychological thriller.' Since it was broad daylight I said the hell with it and I'm glad I did.

I haven't done an internet search on this movie's symbolism yet but here's what I noticed:

1988 - reference to election, Dukakis, etc.

Owl magnet on refrigerator (shown several times)

Single eye symbol on drawing

Religious overtones everywhere - the ultimate one being betrayal, the mother left behind waving to the girlfriend who was 'left behind,' etc.

I thought the name of the author (Roberta Sparrow) of the time travel book might have had some significance simply because it jogged a memory of the word 'sparrow' and the Paper Clip Project and/or MK-Ultra/mind control but I may be off base on that one (as well as the others listed above).

The child porn ring.

Of course, all the overt symbols - the rabbit, the hole/wormhole, etc.

This movie was probably discussed ad nauseum back at GLoP but I am curious to hear what other people thought of the symbolism in this movie (and other movies for as well).

The Sparrow and the Eagle of 'The Great Seal'
QUOTE
Yet, it was not until 1787 that the American bald eagle was officially adopted as the emblem of the United States. While the eagle has been officially recognized as America's national bird, there have been dissenters who feel that the bird was wrong choice.

Perhaps, the most notable was Most Worshipful Brother Benjamin Franklin when he wrote: "I wish that the bald eagle had not been chosen as the representative of our country, he is a bird of bad moral character, he does not get his living honestly, you may have seen him perched on some dead tree, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the labor of the fishing-hawk, and when that diligent bird has at length taken a fish, and is bearing it to its nest for the support of his mate and young ones, the bald eagle pursues him and takes it from him. Besides, he is a rank coward; the little kingbird, not bigger than a sparrow, attacks him boldly and drives him out of the district. He is, therefore, by no means a proper emblem for the brave and honest of America. For a truth, the turkey is in comparison a much more respectable bird, and withal a true original native of America -- a bird of courage, and would not hesitate to attack a grenadier of the British guards, who should presume to invade his farmyard with a red coat on."

The Bush-Dukakis Debate and the Rabbit on Saturday Night Live

Bush-Dukakis Debate

Peter Jennings.....Tom Hanks
Diane Sawyer.....Jan Hooks
Sam Donaldson.....Kevin Nealon
Michaek Dukakis.....Jon Lovitz
George Bush.....Dana Carvey
David Brinkley.....Phil Hartman

Peter Jennings: Good evening. I'm Peter Jennings, in Los Angeles awaiting the start of the second and final presidential debate between Michael Dukakis and George Bush. As you may know, the League of Women Voters withdrew their sponsorship of this debate, citing unreasonable demands by both candidates. In fact, one of the conditions of the Bush camp requires us to tell you what's on other channels. On HBO is "The Sensuous Nurse", starring Ursula Andress and Udo Kier; on Showtime, "The Making of 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?'", an entertaining look at this summer's blockbuster hit; and on ESPN, a repeat of the LSU-Georgia Tech Southeast Conference showdown. And the Democrats have asked us to announce that C-Span will be rerunning the Bentsen-Quayle debate at 4 a.m. Eastern time. Well, this debate is about to start, so let's go to the moderator - Diane Sawyer.

The Bush-Cheney Campaign Manager and the Rabbit
QUOTE
The Bush-Cheney campaign knew about Kerry's vulnerability from the outset. "If the rabbit runs, he'll chase it," said campaign manager Ken Mehlman. Possibly, Mehlman thought, Kerry had overlearned the lesson of the 1988 campaign, when Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis was sluggish about responding to the barbs and provocations of the Republican dirty tricksters. But Mehlman and the others didn't realize, at first, just how self-defeating Kerry's rational process could be. As a matter of routine, the Bush operatives tried to goad Kerry. And when he reacted, they were ready.
